Modular Housing prototypes is an ongoing investigation into small scale urban densification. The premise of the project is the development & construction of alternative housing typologies that provide high quality housing for a market demographic that lies between high density apartment living and low density suburbia.

The starting point for the project was the traditional terrace house: A housing typology that is well known, desirable (often because of location) but typically limited with respect to amenity and quality.

The project adopts a modular building approach where the component parts of the typical terrace are deconstructed and then reassembled in an alternative courtyard configuration. This approach enables a number of significant advantages, allowing a building type that is highly permeable, naturally ventilated, maximises views and amenity, provides useable and activated external space, is flexible and interchangeable, and is highly sustainable.

Significant research has been undertaken into the viability of off-site construction, with detailing developed for preassembled wall, bathroom and joinery components. Principally designed to take advantage of otherwise under utilised narrow and deep land plots, the concept has been presented to, and highly endorsed by a number of Sydney Councils.
